What A Drag!

Rick and I have a date today. We are going to the drag races in Ennis, Texas!

It's been a very long time since I've been to any of these kind. I'm going to be ready for a full day, night or both. I will have my handy dandy bag with snacks, ear plugs, magazine, camera, and, of course, I'll have my phone. I'm not saying I'll be bored. I'm just saying....a girl's gotta be prepared.

Honestly, I think it's going to be fun (unless it's raining!). I asked Justin if it would be very loud, because he went with his dad last year. He just grinned and said, "Nah." Yeah, right!

Hopefully, I will bring back some pictures to share. You do want to see some car pics, don't you? Say what?

Learning From Other Women

This is the bible study we are doing now. It is a continuation of learning life principles from biblical women. Last fall we did the first book. Each book is a 12-week study focusing on a different female character every week.

Each week, we discuss.......

Her place in God's divine plan
Her challenges along the way
Her faith
Her flaws
Her victories
And then finally, how we can apply what we've learned.

We are all part of God's divine plan. How exciting is that?!

Rock Star's Party

We celebrated Glory's 2nd birthday on Saturday. It was a "build-your-own brownie sundae party." What more could she have wanted than her own scoop and bowl? Her mom and dad had all the fun stuff.....M&Ms, hot fudge sauce, pecans, pretzels, cherries, whip cream, etc. Look at that cool pinata, too!

Wish you could see her little black patent shoes. Hope you don't mind this Nanna saying she's such a cutie! Happy Birthday, Glory!

Hands-Only CPR
Sarver Heart Center's Continuous Chest Compression CPR

"Every three days, more Americans die from sudden cardiac arrest than the number who died in the 9-11 attacks. You can lessen this recurring loss by learning Continuous Chest Compression CPR, a hands-only CPR method that doubles a person’s chance of surviving cardiac arrest. It’s easy and does not require mouth-to-mouth contact, making it more likely bystanders will try to help, and it was developed at the University of Arizona College of Medicine."

Please watch this. (You don't even have to watch the entire six-minute video to know what to do.)

You'll Fall For This Fall Dessert!

There are so many variations of apple crisp. I really haven't found one I don't like. So I'm here to tell you, if you haven't made this one......"Try it. You'll like it!"

Butterscotch Pecan Apple Crisp

1 12 oz. pkg Butterscotch chips
¼ c. brown sugar
¼ c. flour
½ t. cinnamon

4 apples, peeled and diced

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Combine the chips, sugar, flour, and cinnamon. Set this aside. Now place the apples in a 9 x 13 dish.  Sprinkle the butterscotch chip mixture over the apples and bake for 20 minutes.

While this is baking,  prepare the topping.

Topping…

½ c. flour
½ c. brown sugar
4 T. softened butter
1 c. chopped pecans
¾ c. oats

Sprinkle the topping on the apple mixture. Now bake for approximately 30-40 minutes until apples are tender.

Side notes:  1) I used Golden Delicious apples. 2) I doubled the cinnamon--just because I love it. 3) I threw in a little extra sugar. Yeah, just because I love it!!
Enjoy!!

Cutie Batuti!

Jenna needed a baby gift for a good friend that had a little girl. Check out these cute outfits that my friend, "Auntie Pam" did for her. (Remember those cute little robes she did?!)

This first outfit--complete with hair accessory-- is for the baby to wear to Friday night games when her dad is coaching the local football team. Won't she be a doll in it?

This one is a little denim ladybug jumper with her name "Maddi" on it.

If you ever need an extra special gift, you should seriously consider "Auntie Pam." Email me, and I can give you her email.

J.O.Y.

Jonah and I had "Nanna time" yesterday. He didn't have a clue I was catching him on video as we were walking in a store for a few minutes. He was so happy and content all day.

Later in the evening as we were going into a restaurant, we were discussing his food of choice off the menu. As my five-year old grandson told me that he wanted a large bowl of their mac and cheese, he said, "Nanna, I'm just a regular guy with a huge appetite."

He's so entertaining!

I guess I wore him out. He fell asleep at 6:45 p.m. on the way home and didn't get up until 6:45 a.m. this morning.

Timing
by Charles R. Swindoll
In September, Terry Shafer was strolling the shops in Moline, Illinois. She knew exactly what she wanted to get her husband, David, for Christmas. A little shop on Fifth attracted her attention, so she popped inside. Her eyes darted toward the corner display. "That's it!" she smiled as she nodded with pleasure. "How much?" she asked the shopkeeper.
"Only $127.50."
Her smile faded into disappointment as she realized David's salary as a policeman couldn't stand such a jolt. Yet she hated to give up without a try, so she applied a little womanly persistence. "Uh, what about putting this aside for me? Maybe I could pay a little each week, then pick it up a few days before Christmas?"
"No," the merchant said, "I won't do that." Then he smiled. "I'll gift-wrap it right now. You can take it with you and pay me later," he said. Terry was elated.
Then came Saturday, October 1. Patrolman David Shafer, working the night shift, got a call in his squad car. A drugstore robbery was in progress. David reacted instantly, arriving on the scene just in time to see the suspect speed away. With siren screaming and lights flashing, he followed in hot pursuit. Three blocks later the getaway vehicle suddenly pulled over and stopped. The driver didn't move. David carefully approached the suspect with his weapon drawn. In a split second, the door flew open as the thief produced a .45-caliber pistol and fired at David's abdomen.
At seven o'clock in the morning a patrolman came to the door of the Shafer home. Calmly and with great care, he told Terry what had happened.
Stunned, Terry thought how glad she was that she had not waited until Christmas to give her husband his present. How grateful she was that the shopkeeper had been willing to let her pay for it later. Otherwise, Dave would have surely died. Instead, he was now in the hospital---not with a gunshot wound, but with only a bad bruise. You see, David was wearing the gift of life Terry could not wait to give---his brand-new bulletproof vest.
Within the movement of events is the Designer, who plans and arranges the times and the seasons, including the minutest detail of life. You question that? Many do.
But unless I miss my guess, David and Terry Shafer don't. It's funny . . . people who survive a calamity don't have much struggle with sovereignty.
Behind the maze is the Master.

Heard Ron Hall!

I was fortunate to hear Ron Hall this past week at a benefit dinner for an outreach center! I read this book a couple of years ago. It is one of my all-time favorites. Oh, and he is a Texan!

Same KInd of Different As Me is an autobiography written (2006) by Ron Hall and Denver Moore. It is the true account of unlikely friendship and love between two men and the woman that brought them together. It is a touching story of faith and the kind of compassion that goes beyond all boundaries. Every chapter is narrated by one of the two men as they reveal the birth of their friendship.

Ron is a Caucasian, well-to-do, TCU graduate. He makes it big as an art dealer. His life begins to change, however, when he and his wife start spending time with the poor at a Fort Worth mission. Eventually, their paths cross with an older black man who has lived as a slave, convict, and homeless vagrant; these various life experiences have deeply embittered him, especially towards white, rich people. Eventually, hate and prejudice are overcome by love and grace.

These men have now been traveling together. Millions of dollars have been directed toward changing the lives of the homeless across our nation.

Mr. Hall told so many stories from the heart. Here's just one.........

Denver and Ron were invited to a private White House dinner during President Bush's administration. President Bush was so impressed with their work for the homeless. As the two men left that evening, Denver began laughing out loud in the car. When asked about it, he told Ron, "I've gone from sleeping under the "bushes" to eating with the "Bushes."

I can't say enough about this book. If by chance one of you has not read it, DO SO!

Dove Season

I am posting this one again today because it's a national holiday. Well, not really!

September 1st around here in Texas is almost considered a State holiday. It's the first day of dove hunting season! All the hunters get up before daylight, dress from head to toe in camo, and head to the coffee shops. Of course, they have been preparing weeks in advance for this morning. They have been practicing their shooting, cleaning their guns, buying extra shells, and making sure they have just the right piece of land staked out where the most birds have been seen prior to this morning.

My dad always looked forward to this day. He had a host of local friends as well as some "city" ones that would come out to the farm for the day. Everyone wanted to go out with him for two reasons. They knew he would know where the birds were (he had a great shot and always got his limit several times). AND they knew they would get to each lunch at our house. Mom was known to be a great cook and that meant a homecooked meal for them! Even if they didn't have much luck, they were winners with or without "game."
